The current statistics is that one in three births are surgical. Studies in Oregon, Minnesota and Wisconsin have shown that having a doula can actually save you money. The average C-section costs 50% more than a vaginal birth, and studies show that having a doula can reduce the risk of a surgical birth by up to 50%. If you follow my math this is a win for both the client and insurance companies. That is why some insurances are starting to cover doulas! Medicaid has started covering doula services in the above-mentioned states. Progress is slow. In general, it takes 20 years to see a change implemented in the hospital setting. While it has been quite a journey, bringing our society on board, many doctors, midwives, doulas, and birth-workers have diligently advocated for mother- centered births. In the past 60 years these efforts have gained momentum, even in the medical community! In 2017, The WHO (World Health Organization) published an official statement regarding doulas, stating that “women who received continuous labor support were more likely to give birth vaginally, and had fewer caesarean, forceps or assisted vacuum births. In addition, women were less likely to use pain medications, were more likely to be satisfied with their birth experience and had shorter labors. It was also found that newborn babies were less likely to have low Apgar scores, with doula support. Because of this type of recognition, insurance companies are beginning to cover midwifery and doula work! My passion to empower birthing mothers was sparked in 2009, when I became pregnant with my first baby. I was terrified of birth! The idea of pushing an 8.5 pound human being through my body really overwhelmed me!
